Additional Star Trek: Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru (Star Trek : Enterprise) Information

To protect the cargo ships essential to the continuing existence of the fledgling Coalition of Planets, the captains of the United Earth's Starfleet are ordered to interstellar picket duty, with little more to do than ask "Who goes there?" into the darkness of space.

Captain Jonathan Archer of the Enterpriseā„¢ seethes with frustration, wondering if anyone else can see what he sees. A secret, closed, militaristic society, convinced that their survival hangs by a thread, who view their neighbors as a threat to their very existence -- the Spartans of ancient Greece, the Russians of the old Soviet Union, the Koreans under Kim Il-sung -- with only one goal: attain ultimate power, no matter the cost. The little-known, never-seen Romulans seem to live by these same principles.

The captain realizes that the bond between the signers of the Coalition charter is fragile and likely to snap if pushed. But he knows that the Romulans are hostile, and he believes they are the force behind the cargo ship attacks. If asked, Archer can offer no proof without endangering his friend's life.

To whom does he owe his loyalty: his friend, his world, the Coalition? And by choosing one, does he not risk losing all of them? What is the solution to a no-win scenario?

What Customers Say About Star Trek: Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru (Star Trek : Enterprise):

Well the PC garbage is to be expected, the gay Klingon's who cares it's only two sentences. It's not that the theme does not have potential "Kobayashi Maru",it's that the writers don't and the poor trees that sacrificed themselves because the authors must have been paid per word is the true tragedy. Why was this book so bad. Good news is there should be a tampon dispensary on the bridge of the Columbia.Good to know that women have increased their presence from 15% in the military and with future contraceptives they cannot bail out when theyget pregnant. Ok, short version book is 300+ pages too long. Most people will buy this book for the Enterprise crew and it's specific characters. If you are interested in these characters well theyare there, like the floor plating, it's there but thats it, it (floor plating) gets more text than Hoshi or Mayweather. Hoshi was there and so was Reed.

Trip well there is always somebody to save him no matter what. It's so boring that you start counting how many times they use the word sanguine. Endless pc crap that provides information about peoplewe don't care about and don't want to. As for Archer he is the smartest and toughest human in the universe but still can't figure things out (it's a trap don't go guess what he does) or act in any way other than being in a perpetual snit. Theproblem is it follows the cliff hanger mentality and puerile writing mandated by publishers that have a outline of how a book is to be written. On and on it goes never getting to the point. Don't know how he can get out of bed without help. Yes, the abomination that was the final episode of Enterprise is discarded for some spy stuff from the "Good that men do".My recommendation is find different authors, they were given the plum Enterprise prizes and you can see the swirl as they flushed them.

The characterizations in Kobayashi Maru are excellent, and the plot teems with exciting dialogue, battles, and covert operations. On the negative side, the book tends to do too much explaining, reminding the reader of unnecessary facts, often repetitively. Better written and more refined than Martin & Mangels' previous Enterprise novel (The Good That Men Do), Kobayashi Maru is a tale of epic proportions. The newly formed Coalition of Planets, comprised of Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar, faces attacks from a mysterious enemy, and Captain Archer and the Starship Enterprise must find the truth behind these incursions. At first, this provides the reader with a solid visualization of the scene, but after a while it gets tedious and in the way of moving the plot forward, especially when excess amounts of description separates dialogue in what should be a fairly fluid conversation. This book is an excellent and intriguing lead-in to the Romulan War, the next novel in the line of Star Trek: Enterprise books. Many familiar faces from the TV series are featured in this novel: Captain Erika Hernandez of the Starship Columbia assists Archer's crew in fending off invaders, while Ambassadors Soval of Vulcan and Gral of Tellar debate with Minister Samuels about the impending war, and later, Archer travels to the Klingon homeworld Qo'noS and fights General Krell in a bat'leth duel. Internal struggles also plague the Enterprise crew as a defiant T'Pol struggles with her emotional attachment to Trip, who is behind enemy lines working as a spy. It's a good read, but the same story could have been accomplished in about a hundred less pages. Also, Trekkies will recognize the name "Kobayashi Maru," and without spoiling too much, I will simply say this book is aptly titled.

Which means that there are inconsistencies with The Original Series. The Coalition of Planets (Earth, Vulcan, Tellar, Andoria) is trying to maintain peace in the sector, but the Romulans are about, attacking space shipping and generally preparing for war against the Coalition. This story is set in the "Enterprise" universe, shortly after where the series ended. But no worries, this is good entertainment for Trek fans. Captain Jonathan Archer of the Enterprise knows that the Romulans mean to make war, but most of the Coalition refuses to recognize the Romulans for what they are. Essentially this novel is the prelude to the outbreak of the Earth-Romulan War so often referred to in The Original Series. This novel is entertaining and hews very closely to the storyline of the "Enterprise" series. Be warned that this novel ends on a cliffhanger, and appears to be the first installment of a trilogy which will cover the entire Earth-Romulan War period in the Trek universe. The Kindle version is formatted well, and enjoyable to read.Good Trek entertainment. RJB.

C'MON. Boy, talk about your ups and downs.I do like the fact that they are keeping the ST Enterprise universe going.and do like some of the references that are made (e.g. the reference to the Iotians, although I did see that one coming as soon as I read the words "imitative species".However, I agree with most of the other reviews, in that the story line takes forever to develop in some spots.the title of the book is clearly not indicative of the story.and the character development is in many places questionable.I mean, Trip's brother, MAYBE.a Romulan centurion, oooookay.but the Klingon fleet admiral. I'm not gay, and I'm not against extending your own views, but any 22nd century gay Klingon would have never made it past the 2nd grade - having died from a "photonic wedgie" on the Klingon playground.but seriously, this struck me as an insult to my intelligence, the authors are clearly forcing their own political and social views into this story.and there were clearly other instances of "irrelevance" throughout the book. And Trip & T'pol clearly bring a new meaning to the phrase, "get a room" lol.Yes, I will warily pick up a copy of "The Romulan War" once it FINALLY comes out in October (after all, I've come this far).

this book is exciting from page one. if your a trekie nerd like me and was highly disappointed how the enterprise series ended so abruptly this book along with "The Good That Men Do (Star Trek: Enterprise)" set about to fix what was poorly done on the last episodes. i cant stop reading this book. its so good.
